Honeymoon in Vegas Part 1

On Monday night, Kerry’s parents drove us to the airport for our flight to Las Vegas (first class). While the flight was delayed for a short while, everything went pretty smoothly otherwise Kerry slept for most of the six hour flight, and when we landed it was already 11:00 PM in Vegas. We checked in at the Bellagio, and were VERY impressed with our room. Our room is on the 28th floor and overlooks the lake (and regular water shows). See photos for the view!

When we woke up in the morning, I used the hotel Internet service to research digital cameras on Consumer reports. Having forgotten our camera at home, we decided that we needed to document our trip regardless. We took a cab to Fry’s Electronics to buy a new camera (Canon A570 IS ). So far the camera has impressed. No surprise there, as it is a CR Best Buy.

Fortunately, were able to catch a cab at the electronics store, and had the driver bring us to Ethel M’s in Henderson, which we had been targeting since seeing it featured on the Food network. Unfortunately, Ethel’s didn’t quite deliver the experience we were hoping for. The views of the chocolate making factory were limited, and we walked through the tour in about five minutes. We did stop for some hot chocolate, and walked through the cactus garden, but I was disappointed to find that the cacti were already covered with Christmas lights, which I couldn’t possibly understand. Christmas in October in the desert I guess.

When we finished with the cacti after another five minutes, we discovered that cabs don’t typically stop at Ethel’s… and after discussing our predicament with a tour bus driver, decided that our hopes of getting back to the hotel rested squarely upon the shoulders of the Las Vegas public transit system. We took two buses, the second one, the “Deuce”, was a double decker that stopped at all of the hotels along the strip. Because we got on the bus at the point of origination for the route, we got the best seats on the bus, the front two on the second level, which gave us a full view of much of the goings on along the Strip, as well as a good look at some of the hotels we haven’t been able to visit.

We were dropped off at The Venetian, where we had lunch at the Grand Lux CafĂ©. Kerry had a lunch-size Asian chicken salad. I has a short rib sloppy joe with fries. It was terrific! After that, we did some more exploring. Kerry had a run-in with a Blue Man, (see photo). I checked out the imperial Palace sports book to see the odds of JD Drew winning World Series MVP, but they didn’t have that listed. Red Sox to sweep was 5:1. Rockies to sweep was 12:1. And the biggest head-scratcher was BC at 4:1 to win the BCS Championship. Between you and me, I will be stunned if they make it through Virginia Tech tomorrow night…. Returned to hotel to get ready for dinner and a show.

Our first real dinner after the wedding was at the Kokomo Steakhouse at the Mirage, and we didn’t hold back. I had their surf and turf, featuring Alaska King Crab Legs and Filet Mignon. My first experience with the “deadliest catch” would have made my brother John proud. The crab legs were huge, and reminded me of lobster. They were already opened, so the ample meat was easy to get at. Drawn butter on the side enhanced the experience. The steak was good, but not great. Kerry had the prime rib and neither of us has ever seen a bigger piece of steak. I swear it was bigger than Kerry! If you don’t believe me, take a look at the photo! We enjoyed our dinner with a glass of 2003 Wild Horse Pinot Noir, at the recommendation of our waitress. Finally, dessert, on the house for the honeymooners, was a molten chocolate cake with raspberries. It was delicious and a nice sweet ending to the dinner.

After dinner we headed over to the Danny Gans show. Danny is a performer who has been named performer of the year in Vegas ten times. Dubbed the man of 1000 voices, Gans was very funny, especially when jumping from voice to voice in a musical tour of the sixties and seventies. Later in the show he did impressions of five of his favorite movie characters, including Forrest Gump and Scent of a Woman. The show lasted about 90 minutes, and afterward, we were pooped. We returned to our hotel room for some well-deserved rest.

Travel notes: Due to the wildfires in southern California, we’re planning on skipping the L.A. portion of our trip. We’re assuming that 1 million displaced people will make getting around even more difficult than it would have already been, and we’re currently looking into our options, but likely will be driving to San Francisco from Vegas and either spending a little extra time along the way or in San Francisco. Our initial idea was to spend more time here, but we have since found out that an extra night in out room would set us back to the tume of $700.00! Ouch… Coming up on Day 2… Madame Tussaud’s, World Series Game 1, Dinner and O.
